Is ESCOT really free?

Yes - 100% free. There is no cost to enroll, no membership fees, no equipment fees, and no hidden charges. Every youth ages 8-18 participates at zero cost to their family. Always.

What ages does ESCOT serve?
Our core youth development program serves ages 8 through 18. Young adults ages 19-25 may participate in our young adult boxing program. We do not currently offer open gym time for individuals over 25.

What are your hours?
ESCOT is open Monday through Friday. During the regular school year, we run from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM. On days when school is out, hours shift to 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM.

Where are you located?
32150 Dorsey Street, Westland, Michigan 48186. We are inside the Westland Recreation Center complex. Free parking is available on site.

What does a typical day look like?
Kids arrive after school and move through a structured program covering all Four Corners - Academics, Athletics, Community, and Leadership. A session might include homework help, fitness training, boxing instruction, a guest speaker, or community service activities. No two days are exactly alike, but every day is intentional.

Does my child have to box?
No. Boxing is one part of the program, not a requirement. Every participant is welcome regardless of interest in boxing. Youth who do want to box must be enrolled in the full youth development program first.

How do I register my child?
Click JOIN and complete the admissions forms - one form per child. Once all four forms are received and completed, your child can start the very next day we are open. Questions? Email info@escot.org.

What should my child bring?
Comfortable athletic clothing and a willingness to show up. We'll take care of the rest.

How do I volunteer?
Visit our Volunteer page to learn about available roles and what to expect. When you're ready, click "Apply to Volunteer" and complete the form. We'll be in touch within a few business days.

Is a background check required?
Yes. All volunteers must complete a background check before working with youth. This is processed at no cost to you and is required for the safety of every young person in our program.

Do I need specific qualifications to volunteer?
It depends on the role. Tutors need subject knowledge, trainers benefit from athletic or fitness experience, and speakers bring their own story. For most roles, the main qualification is showing up consistently and genuinely caring about kids.

How is ESCOT funded?
ESCOT is funded entirely through donations from individuals, community partners, and corporate supporters. No government funding. No tuition. No fees. Your gift is what keeps the doors open.

Where does my donation go?
100% of every donation goes directly to ESCOT youth. ESCOT is 100% volunteer-led, which means there is no paid staff drawing from donated funds. Every dollar is program-direct.

Is ESCOT a registered nonprofit?
Yes. ESCOT Youth Development, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. EIN: 47-4517277. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. You can view our public financials on ProPublica.

Do donors receive a tax receipt?
Yes. An automated tax receipt is sent to your email address immediately following your online donation via PayPal.

What does ESCOT stand for?
ESCOT stands for Emanuel Steward Champions of Tomorrow - named in honor of the legendary boxing trainer Emanuel Steward, who coached more world champions than any trainer in history from the original KRONK Gymnasium in Detroit.
