This huge accomplishment qualifies these young champs for the regional tournament and places Norwayne Boxing Gym as number one in the state in terms of wins. In Memoriam: Damon Weaver

We had a young man with us, Damon Weaver, who was one of the original participants of Norwayne Boxing
Gym (NBG).

Damon was a kind soul who realized once he had flunked out of high school, that he needed help getting his life back together.
He walked into a friend's class at Wayne Memorial High School to talk to him about this boxing gym he had heard about that could possibly help him. When the teacher asked what he was doing, if he was in the class, Damon was honest and said no but he needed to talk to his friend to find out a solution to his problem.

At that time the principal, Kevin Weber, noticed the determination and goodness in this young man and led him to Erskine Wade, lead coach of NBG.

Erskine also saw the good in Damon and befriended him instantly. With Erskine's help and the help of the community, Damon earned his GED, joined the National Guard and became an independent member of the community.

Through all that, he stayed a member of Norwayne Boxing. He  valued the program to help himself grow physically & mentally as well as valued the ability to mentor younger members of the gym.

Not only was he recognized through the gym but also through community members including staff at Jefferson Barnes Community Vitality Center. Joanne Campbell, Director of Community Development, mentioned how you could always count on Damon to help with any community project, help anyone in need and contributed his time to any small deed that needed to be done.

This is a sad day to know last week Damon's young life came to a tragic end as he was killed in a car and motorcycle collision.

Although physically Damon was not the best boxer Norwayne Boxing has seen (2 losses, 1 win...his last fight!), but in the big picture of NBG's mission, he was the finest member the gym has seen to date.

Damon will be greatly lost but his legacy to be a leader and mentor to the program today lives on. Our prayers & support to his family for this tragic loss as well as to his friends in the community as a whole.

You will be missed Damon.

NORWAYNE BOXER WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Congratulations to Ryan Reed for winning the National USA Boxing Junior Olympic Qualifiers. This incredible accomplishment is the first time a Norwayne Boxing Gym boxer has achieved this title. He will be traveling to Denver for a two-week training program with boxers from all over the U.S. It's a life-changing, life-shaping experience that was possible because of everyone who contributes to Norwayne Boxing Gym, the volunteers and staff, as well as the hard work, dedication and focus of our champ Ryan Reed.

ANNUAL SUMMER RETREAT BROADENS HORIZONS

In August, founder Jeff Styers took Norwayne Boxing Gym's Elite team on a two-day lakeside retreat for boating, fishing, basketball, bonfires, flashlight tag and all the fun that goes with summer. Many had never been outside of Detroit, on a boat, or at a beach. The time away broadened their views of the world, prepared them for their futures and helped them see a life beyond the current struggles. The Elites included: D'Money, Mike, Val, LJ, Jaxson, Jirair, Jordon, Neigel, Ryan, J Thompson, Sean, Devon and AJ.
