Why should I use this Java setup?

We require Java 1.1.8 and a user interface toolkit called "Swing." Most recent versions of web browsers have the ability to run basic Java applets, but do not always meet these additional requirements. We have found the easiest way to meet the requirements on Windows is to use a plug-in. On the MacOS, you must have Macintosh Runtime for Java, and Swing must be installed in a particular place in your extensions folder (and additionally, Netscape on the MacOS requires a plug-in).

Using Mac OS 7.6.1?

It is theoretically possible to run ESCOT applets under Mac OS 7.6.1, but not recommended. If you cannot avoid using 7.6.1, send email to escot-help for details on how to set up your computer.

Using Unix?

ESCOT applets should run under Unix, but we cannot provide technical support. To set up your machine to run ESCOT applets, download the Java Plug-in for your OS and make sure that your web browser supports JavaScript and is enabled to run JavaScript.
